South Africa is gearing up for a December to remember as global music icons Tyla and Thandiswa Mazwai prepare to dazzle fans with electrifying performances, marking a thrilling close to 2024’s live entertainment calendar.
Tyla, the Grammy-winning sensation who has taken the world by storm with her viral hits and genre-defining style, is returning to her roots. Following her unforgettable show in Cape Town’s Grand Arena, the “Water” hitmaker is set to ignite the SunBet Arena in Menlyn this Saturday, December 7. The performance is part of her first local tour since achieving global superstardom. Supported by local talents like Kelvin Momo, Filah Lah Lah, and Daliwonga, Tyla promises a spectacular homecoming for her fans, affectionately called “Tygers.”
"This journey has taken me to incredible places, but there’s no place like home," she said, brimming with excitement. "I can’t wait to share this moment with everyone who has supported me along the way."
Tyla’s meteoric rise has been marked by numerous accolades this year, including a Grammy for Best African Music Performance, an MTV Video Music Award for Best Afrobeats, and a historic triple nomination at the Billboard Music Awards for her hits “Water,” “Jump,” and “Truth or Dare.” Her debut album continues to dominate charts worldwide, solidifying her as a trailblazer in the Afrobeat and Popiano genres.
On the same night, legendary South African singer Thandiswa Mazwai will take the stage at Pretoria’s State Theatre for her Thanksgiving concert, “Umbulelo.” Having toured New York, London, and Toronto, Mazwai returns home to celebrate a monumental year, including the 20th anniversary of her debut album Zabalaza and the release of her critically acclaimed album Sankofa.
“This show is my way of giving thanks to the incredible support I’ve received—from my family, my friends, and the fans who keep my music alive,” Mazwai shared.
Known for her genre-defining work with Bongo Maffin and her powerful solo career, Mazwai’s concert will feature timeless hits like “Sabala” and “Emini,” alongside fresh tracks that have captivated audiences globally. Her recent Tiny Desk performance, which has garnered nearly a million views, is a testament to her enduring influence on the post-apartheid South African music scene.
As if these powerhouse performances weren’t enough, families looking to soak up the festive spirit can head to Fourways Mall’s Santa Land Adventure Zones. Running until December 22, the immersive experience features five themed zones packed with holiday magic, from Santa’s Igloo to a vibrant playground and festive treats. Tickets for the interactive wonderland are just R50, promising affordable fun for all ages.
