Nigerian music icon Adekunle Gold is marking a milestone this year, celebrating 10 years since his debut single, Sade, catapulted him into the spotlight. The artist, who began his career blending urban Yoruba folk music with heartfelt storytelling, has since transformed into a global pop sensation.
In 2014, Adekunle Gold caught the public's attention with Sade, a soulful reimagining of One Direction’s Story of My Life. The song's viral success not only introduced his distinct artistry to the Nigerian music scene but also set the stage for a career defined by reinvention and versatility.
Reflecting on his journey, Adekunle Gold recently credited singer-songwriter and producer Pheelz as a key figure in his breakthrough. In an interview, he revealed how Pheelz championed his talent, convincing YBNL founder Olamide to offer him a record deal. Before his signing, Adekunle Gold had already built a relationship with the label as a graphics designer, crafting artwork for artists like Lil Kesh and Viktor.
Under the YBNL banner, Adekunle Gold’s career soared. His debut album, Gold, released in 2016, was both a commercial and critical triumph, featuring hits like Orente and Pick Up. The project cemented his reputation as a masterful songwriter with an ability to weave personal and cultural narratives into captivating melodies.
Over the past decade, the artist affectionately known as “AG Baby” has continued to evolve, seamlessly transitioning from his folk-inspired roots to a vibrant pop aesthetic. His 2020 album, Afro Pop Vol. 1, marked a turning point, showcasing his ability to explore new sonic territories while maintaining his signature lyrical depth.
Now with five albums and a string of chart-topping hits under his belt, Adekunle Gold has emerged as one of Africa’s most celebrated performers. His evolution from a niche artist to a global star has not only elevated his profile but also redefined the possibilities for African music on the international stage.
As he commemorates this significant career milestone, Adekunle Gold remains a testament to the power of reinvention, resilience, and the enduring appeal of authentic artistry. With a growing global fanbase and a reputation for delivering electrifying performances, the next chapter of his career promises to be as groundbreaking as the first.
