South Africa’s music scene has always been a powerhouse of creativity, but in 2024, amapiano solidified its place as more than just a genre. It became a global movement. As its pulsating beats and infectious melodies continue to dominate local and international airwaves, the year saw a new wave of artists and anthems capturing the hearts of millions.
Amapiano, a uniquely South African blend of deep house, jazz, and lounge music, has grown from township roots to a worldwide phenomenon. This year, it transcended borders, with fans from Lagos to London and Los Angeles embracing its vibrant rhythms. It’s no longer just a sound; it’s a lifestyle—a cultural expression that speaks to resilience, innovation, and joy.
The Rise of Global Anthems
Among this year’s breakout hits, “Tshwala Bam” emerged as a cultural juggernaut. Created by TitoM, Yuppe, S.N.E, and EeQue, the track exploded on TikTok, inspiring a viral dance challenge that caught the attention of global stars like Burna Boy and Chris Brown. The remix, featuring Burna Boy, catapulted the song to new heights, proving amapiano’s ability to unite diverse audiences through rhythm.
Another massive hit, Uncle Waffles’ “Wadibusa,” showcased the genre’s boundary-pushing creativity. Released in April, the track became a fixture on global playlists as Uncle Waffles toured the world. Her collaborations with Royal MusiQ, OPH Sage, and Pcee added depth to the track, while a remix featuring U.S. rapper Joey Bada$$ underscored amapiano’s universal appeal.
Timeless Beats and Viral Moments
Tyler ICU continued his reign as a hitmaker with “Ebhasini,” a track that first dropped in February but maintained its dominance throughout the year. Featuring a star-studded lineup including LeeMcKrazy, Tman Xpress, and Visca, “Ebhasini” cemented Tyler ICU’s reputation as a maestro of amapiano’s chart-topping anthems.
Meanwhile, “Yebo Lapho (Gogo)” brought together Felo Le Tee, Scotts Maphuma, DJ Maphorisa, and others to create a track that had fans chanting in unison. With its addictive bassline and Scotts Maphuma’s signature catchphrases, the song became a staple at parties and festivals, embodying the electrifying energy that defines amapiano.
But perhaps the most inspiring story of the year came from “Biri Marung.” Initially a humble TikTok clip sung by Real Tebogo G Mashego, the track faced skepticism before evolving into a national sensation. Collaborators like DJ Maphorisa and Focalistic helped refine the song, turning it into an anthem that not only topped charts but inspired another viral dance challenge, proving once again that amapiano is as much about grassroots creativity as it is about stardom.
A Movement Beyond Borders
2024 has proven that amapiano is not just music; it’s a cultural force shaping global conversations about African identity and creativity. With its ability to bring people together across continents, the genre continues to break barriers, showcasing the vibrant talent and innovative spirit of South Africa to the world.
