Nigerian billionaire and philanthropist Adedeji Adeleke, father of superstar musician Davido, has announced that his groundbreaking 1,250MW thermal power plant is set to become operational by January 2025. Positioned to be the largest thermal power facility in Nigeria, the plant is expected to make a significant impact on the country's energy sector, which has long been plagued by power shortages and instability.

Speaking during the Seventh Day Adventist General Conference Annual Council on October 15, 2024, Adeleke shed light on the arduous journey of bringing the $2 billion project to life. Located in Ondo State, the power plant has not only created over 1,000 local jobs but also faced numerous challenges along the way, including bureaucratic hurdles and theft, delaying the project’s completion.
Adeleke's experience in securing the necessary permits for the project was far from smooth. He recounted facing resistance from government officials, with one particularly discouraging statement that the power plant would "never see the light of day." Refusing to accept that as the final word, Adeleke turned to his faith, praying for guidance as he navigated Nigeria's complex regulatory environment.
His determination eventually paid off, and despite these early obstacles, the project has made significant progress, with Pacific Energy, Adeleke's firm, working in collaboration with Chinese engineering companies to design and construct the plant. This partnership has been instrumental in ensuring the project stays on track for its 2025 launch.
While the project has been a beacon of hope for local employment, it also experienced a setback when looters targeted the site, stealing $5 million worth of turbine components. This loss caused delays, but Adeleke reassured the public that the project is now back on course, with completion in sight.
In addition to powering thousands of homes and businesses, Adeleke’s plant is expected to alleviate Nigeria’s longstanding power woes, offering a much-needed solution to the nation’s unreliable energy supply. By diversifying the energy grid, the thermal plant could also attract further industrial investments to the region, positioning Ondo State as a hub for energy innovation and development.
Adedeji Adeleke’s investment in Nigeria’s energy future aligns with his broader commitment to national development, education, and philanthropy. In July 2023, while speaking at Adeleke University's graduation ceremony, he emphasized how the power plant serves as a key component of his mission to give back to his country. His involvement in education, community development, and now energy security underscores his belief in the power of sustainable investments to drive progress.
As the project nears completion, it represents not only a triumph over adversity but also a symbol of what can be achieved through perseverance and strategic partnerships. With its January 2025 launch date fast approaching, the power plant is poised to make a transformative contribution to Nigeria’s energy landscape, ensuring that Adeleke’s vision for a brighter, more stable future is finally realized.
