South Africa’s very own Grammy-winning sensation Tyla made an unforgettable return to her homeland this week, igniting the local music scene with an exclusive performance in Johannesburg ahead of her highly anticipated two-city tour.
The event, held in collaboration with Coke Studio and Spotify, transformed Sandton into a vibrant hub of amapiano culture, offering fans an immersive experience that celebrated Tyla’s global success while staying true to her South African roots.
As fans, affectionately known as “Tygas,” streamed into the venue, they were welcomed by a dazzling array of activities designed to set the stage for an unforgettable evening. Glitter tattoo stations, nail bars, photo booths, and music listening hubs dotted the venue, while attendees sported free merchandise from a pop-up Tyla shop. The night was soundtracked by amapiano beats spun by DJ Tshegu and energized by hype master Thulani “Way” Maduse, whose electric presence kept the crowd buzzing.
Johannesburg’s renowned dance community was also out in full force, bringing the city’s signature rhythm to life on the dance floor. Among the attendees were South Africa’s top influencers and celebrities, including content creators Chad Jones and Coachella Randy, celebrated designer Rich Mnisi, and retired swimmer Tatjana Smith. Adding to the star power, Rachel Kolisi, newly single and unabashedly enthusiastic, was spotted dancing with infectious energy alongside her family.
When Tyla finally took the stage, the atmosphere reached a fever pitch. Performing a mix of her chart-topping hits like “Jump,” “Breathe on Me,” and “Truth or Dare,” she also debuted her emotional new single, "Tears," a collaboration with Coke Studio that has already generated buzz among fans and critics alike.
The intimate performance comes on the heels of Tyla’s historic achievements, including a record-breaking 52 weeks at the top of the Billboard Afrobeats chart and her self-titled debut album becoming Spotify’s most-streamed release by a Black female artist in 2024. These milestones firmly cement Tyla as a trailblazer in global music, elevating both amapiano and African artistry to unprecedented heights.
As Tyla gears up for her sold-out concerts in Cape Town and Pretoria on December 5 and 7, fans are brimming with anticipation. Her homecoming performance offered just a taste of the magic to come, promising a tour that will not only celebrate her meteoric rise but also reaffirm her deep connection to her roots.
