The Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) is set to open its doors to the vibrant storytelling of Showmax’s latest Nigerian drama series, Princess on a Hill, on November 7, 2024. This exclusive screening brings a fresh perspective to Nollywood by blending corporate ambition with a reality show twist, aiming to captivate audiences with the story of Zara (Onyinye Odokoro), a young executive thrust into the ruthless world of corporate power struggles.
However, the festival’s highlight isn’t just the screening. Showmax’s parent company, MultiChoice, will also host a thought-provoking panel titled Crafting Local Content for Global Success, which dives into a key issue facing the African entertainment industry: positioning African stories on the world stage. The panel will address how African filmmakers can produce content that resonates universally while staying authentic to local experiences and narratives.
MultiChoice's involvement in AFRIFF underscores the festival's growing influence as a platform for both artistic expression and industry development in African cinema. "This session will help African creators explore new strategies to make local content universally engaging," said a MultiChoice representative.
Co-created by Abiola Sobo and Tolu Ajayi, Princess on a Hill follows Zara’s journey from reality TV stardom to high-stakes business as she contends with the intimidating CEO, Moyosore Lawson (Bimbo Manuel). The series not only highlights the competitive corporate landscape but also echoes Showmax’s commitment to authentic African narratives.
AFRIFF 2024 promises to be a convergence of African storytelling, insight, and global vision, offering a unique opportunity for industry professionals and cinema lovers alike to celebrate and redefine African storytelling in the global context.
Princess on a Hill will premiere on Showmax on November 7, following its AFRIFF screening.
