The Nigerian film industry has once again witnessed a surge in box office sales, as Family Gbese, the latest offering from Inkblot Productions, continues to captivate audiences. In just two weeks, the movie has grossed an impressive ₦28.1 million, with a strong ₦15.2 million earned in its debut week and an additional ₦12.7 million the following week.
Family Gbese is a compelling drama that delves into the emotional struggles of a young man torn between his career success and his family’s turmoil. At the heart of the plot is the protagonist, who finds himself grappling with his elder brother’s crippling gambling addiction, which threatens not only his personal life but the family’s safety. As his brother’s debts to dangerous gangs mount, the protagonist is forced to choose between protecting his family or his love life. The film weaves a poignant narrative about family loyalty, the personal cost of success, and the complexities of relationships.
The movie comes on the heels of Inkblot's previous hit, Muri & Ko, which grossed over ₦100 million. Released in cinemas on November 8, 2024, Family Gbese continues to prove the growing appeal of Nigerian cinema both locally and internationally.
The film is helmed by British-Nigerian director Michelle Bello, a seasoned filmmaker who began her career in 2007. Her path to prominence includes roles as a producer on Moments With Mo and later as the director of Small Boy, a debut feature that garnered acclaim at major international film festivals. Bello’s work has earned her multiple accolades, including the Trailblazer Award at the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA) in 2014.
Family Gbese boasts a stellar cast, featuring accomplished actors such as Ireti Doyle, Muyiwa Ademola, and Mike Ezuruonye, among others. Their performances bring depth to a gripping narrative that speaks to the universal themes of familial duty and personal sacrifice.
